Katabasis • Anabasis

ΚΑΤΆΒΑΣΙΣ • ΑΝΆΒΑΣΙΣ — four descents, three returns.

Going Down Is Easy

The myths always gave more weight to the descent — gravity helps. Orpheus enters the underworld without difficulty; it’s the climb out where he fails. So: four tracks down, three tracks up. The descent gets more room because descent is easy. The return earns fewer, because fewer make it back — and those who do arrive changed, reduced, smelling of plum blossom through plaster.

Katabasis is spectacle; anabasis is survival.
